Nigel Smith, Netwealth’s Technical Services Consultant, will unpack strategies you will find valuable for clients approaching their golden years of retirement. Typically, clients are cramming contributions into super, or, at the opposite end of the spectrum, seeking alternative strategies having maxed out their super opportunities.

To break down this complex subject, we have put together four topics, each focused on a different financial aspect, pertinent to clients as they approach and contemplate their twilight years:

  1. “Structures to die for" explores testamentary trusts, the new rules around excepted income and compares them to child super pensions. We look at them both qualitatively and quantitatively to help you guide clients to the best outcome. Importantly too, we take a brief look at those structures “not to die with” to avoid the damage these can do to the best financial plans.
  2. “Family planning matters” looks at alternative investment structures and strategies to follow through into their retirement years. This can allow a holistic approach including business structures, gifting and intergenerational wealth transfer options. We round this topic out with a look at the possible pros and cons of the new 6 member SMSF rules.
  3. “The last bite” Need strategies to squeeze in that last super contribution? This topic looks at ways to do that now and the possibilities under the proposed legislative changes going forward.
  4. “Sharing is caring” reminds us of the ‘income splitting’ opportunities that exist as a couple – 2 tax free thresholds, transfer balance caps, total super balances, as well as the opportunity of contribution splitting and possible ownership options. We will look at a range of concepts and strategies to capitalise on these opportunities.
